Google and OpenAI Now Build the Screen, Not the Link

Google's generative UI rolled out globally in English in AI Mode by August 19 and has started rolling out in AI Overviews too, and OpenAI launched its own version, Intelligent UI, with GPT-6 on October 7.

What is generative UI?

Generative UI means the AI builds the screen for each answer, using charts, buttons, maps or a small interactive tool instead of a block of text or a list of links. Google and OpenAI are both doing this now, independently.

What has Google shipped so far?

Google brought generative UI to AI Mode, the chat-style tab in Search, on Nov. 18, 2025, alongside Gemini 3. At I/O on May 19, 2026, Google said the capability would reach everyone in Search "free of charge" that summer. By Aug. 19, 2026, Google confirmed it had launched globally in English in AI Mode, and started rolling out in AI Overviews too.

Google builds these interfaces with Antigravity, its AI coding tool, and Gemini 3.5 Flash. Gemini writes code for each interactive tool in real time and drops it into the response. The examples Google has shown publicly are study aids: simulations and tools for understanding complex topics.

Google also previewed a future feature, coming "in the coming months," that lets people build small apps inside Search. Its example was a fitness tracker pulling in reviews, live maps and weather. Google did not say whose reviews it would use.

What is OpenAI's version?

OpenAI calls its version Intelligent UI, launched with GPT-6 on October 7. ChatGPT answers can now include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, and interactive elements, built from ready-made parts while the answer is still being generated. It rolled out to most paid plans that day, then to Free and Go plans the next day.

OpenAI's examples: a Sunday roast timer alongside a recipe, a road trip on a map, a bill splitter, a retirement calculator. OpenAI's announcement mentions web search but says nothing about websites, sources, or links back to them.

Does either show a business's own data yet?

No. Every public example from both companies is built from what the AI already knows, not from a specific business's listings. Neither has shown a hotel's rooms, a tour operator's availability, or any business's own inventory inside a generated screen. Google's November 2025 post says responses carry "prominent links to high-quality content across the web," which places links next to the generated interface, not inventory inside it.

Whether people are even seeing generative UI at scale is unclear. Google reports AI Overviews past 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode past 1 billion. OpenAI reports more than 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users. Neither company has said how many of those users have actually seen a generated interface.

Roomer Editorial's take

Nothing in either company's announcement puts a hotel's rooms or a tour's availability inside a generated screen yet. That's the part worth sitting with, not the demos.

The pattern underneath is familiar. Booking.com didn't win by owning hotels. It won by sitting between the traveler and the hotel's booking page, long enough that travelers stopped looking past it. Generative UI gives Google and OpenAI the same shot, except the interface isn't a results page with Booking.com's name on it. It's a calculator, a map, a tool, built on the fly, with your business's data nowhere in sight unless someone pays to put it there.

That's the choice this creates, eventually: wait for Google to decide whether and how to route a booking to you, or keep building the channel where your content, your video, and your bookable pages live under your own name.

We'd build the second one regardless of how generative UI shakes out. A travel creator posting Santorini hotel reels doesn't control what Google decides to show inside a chat answer. They do control whether their own video turns into a page someone can actually book from, with their name on it and their commission at the end. Roomer turns creator video into exactly that: your own site, bookable pages, booking rails through Vio, Stay22, GetYourGuide, Viator and Klook, and 100% of commissions on bookings made on your own site. Over 11,000 creators are already doing this instead of waiting to find out what a search engine decides to build around their content.
